The effect of exposure to radiofrequency fields on cancer risk in the general and working population: A protocol for a systematic review of human obs…

2021

Highlights • RF-EMF was classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic to humans (2B) in May 2011 • A systematic review of all subject-relevant epidemiological studies is now needed. • A detailed protocol ensures the review's transparency, utility and credibility. • Original study validity will be evaluated with a customized OHAT risk of bias tool. • Internal coherence and external plausibility will inform conclusions.

Quality of Life in Individuals Affected by Arnold Chiari Malformation: Comparison and Validation of a Measurement Instrument.

2017

BACKGROUND Introduction. Arnold Chiari Malformation (ACM) type I is a pathology whose symptomatology has repercussions for the quality of life of those affected by it. Quality-of-life measurement instruments can allow the severity of the impact of Chiari type I malformation on patients' lives to be monitored. The Chiari Symptom Profile (CSP) is a valid and reliable instrument designed for this purpose. The aim of the study was to adapt the CSP to Spanish and to explore the reliability and validity of this construct in the context of Spanish-speaking patients with ACM. METHODS The English CSP instrument has a good internal validity and consistency. We used a standardized procedure for the li…

Assessing natural metalinguistic skills in people with Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia

2019

Abstract Objective The aim of this paper is to assess whether the use of natural metalinguistic skills can be used to differentiate linguistic-communicative profiles of people with dementia (Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia in the behavioural and primary progressive aphasia variants) in the earliest stages of the disease. Method A sample of 180 people was selected. Sixty had Alzheimer’s disease, 20 had frontotemporal dementia of the behavioural variant, and 40 had frontotemporal dementia of the primary progressive aphasia variant (20 had non-fluent primary progressive aphasia and 20 had semantic dementia). The control group was composed of 60 healthy people with ages, gender,…

The evidence of neuraxial administration of analgesics for cancer-related pain: a systematic review

2015

Background The present systematic review analysed the existing evidence of analgesic efficacy and side effects of opioids without and with adjuvant analgesics delivered by neuraxial route (epidural and subarachnoid) in adult patients with cancer. Methods Search strategy was elaborated with words related to cancer, pain, neuraxial route, analgesic and side effects. The search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane for the period until February 2014. Studies were analysed according to methods, results, quality of evidence, and strength of recommendation. Results The number of abstracts retrieved was 2147, and 84 articles were selected for full reading. The final selection comprised nin…

Subclinical thought disorder in first-degree relatives of schizophrenic patients. Results from a matched-pairs study with the Thought Disorder Index

1995

To assess the frequency and quality of formal thought disorder in schizophrenic patients and their first-degree relatives, a consecutive series of 36 unmedicated patients, 20 siblings of these patients and 37 normal control subjects were examined with Holzman's Thought Disorder Index (TDI). As a proof of the internal validity of this tool, the patients demonstrated significantly more thought disorder than the controls as measured by the TDI total score and various subscores, which proved the internal validity of this tool in a German-speaking sample. In addition, in a pairwise comparison with controls who were individually matched by age and sex the patients' siblings had a significantly hi…

All Student Samples Differ: On Participant Selection in Communication Science

2012

When conducting experiments, researchers in communication science often rely on convenience samples of students. This study provides evidence consistent with a concern that between-participant differences in exposure to communication theories can be a threat to the internal validity of conclusions reached. Using cultivation theory as a context for studying this threat, this study examines the influence of stage in university education and discipline of study on the ability to detect the cultivation hypothesis and participants' responses to questions regularly used in studies of cultivation. We found that university students at different stages of their studies and studying different discipl…

A Critical Review Of The Hardiness Scales

2018

INTRODUCTION: The construct of hardiness - structured in the control, commitment and challenge components - is a personality variable that allows individuals to respond effectively to stress demands, to perform better and to stay healthier. Individuals with high scores on these three factors show less powerlessness and alienation, interpret life events as controllable, interesting and as growth opportunities. Although in the last forty years many scholars had contributed to consolidate the hardiness theoretical framework, a substantial critical issue emerges with regard to the large heterogeneity of the scales used to measure hardiness. OBJECTIVE: The main aim of the study is to conduct a c…

Systematic review of guidelines for internal validity in the design, conduct and analysis of preclinical biomedical experiments involving laboratory …

2020

Over the last two decades, awareness of the negative repercussions of flaws in the planning, conduct and reporting of preclinical research involving experimental animals has been growing. Several initiatives have set out to increase transparency and internal validity of preclinical studies, mostly publishing expert consensus and experience. While many of the points raised in these various guidelines are identical or similar, they differ in detail and rigour. Most of them focus on reporting, only few of them cover the planning and conduct of studies. The aim of this systematic review is to identify existing experimental design, conduct, analysis and reporting guidelines relating to preclinic…

Development and Psychometric Validation of the Brief Nurses' Practice Environment Scale and Its Relation to Burnout Syndrome and Job Satisfaction: A …

2020

Introduction: Nursing environment is a vast concept that traditionally has included a wide range of job characteristics and has been related to burnout and job satisfaction. For its measurement, the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PESNWI) stands out. However, shorter instruments are needed. The purpose of the study is to develop and test the Brief Nurses' Practice Environment (BNPE) Scale. Methods: The BNPE Scale was developed and tested in a sample of 210 Spanish nurses (data collection 2018).Results: Cronbach's alpha was 0.702. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), with an excellent fit, offered evidence of internal validity. Regarding validity, the BNPE Scale predi…
